The show at (Le) Poisson Rouge, scheduled for 11:30 p.m.-4 a.m., involved last-minute personnel shifts, but this only heightened the spontaneity of the music. Over 200 people attended. Large Professor, an important producer and DJ, opened the night spinning jazzy sides, accompanied half the time by drummer Daru Jones of Slum Village. Then came what Peter Rosenberg of HOT 97 FM rightly called "an ill band": Spalding on bass, Thomas on trumpet, altoist Jaleel Shaw, tenorist Marcus Strickland, trombonist Corey King, keyboardist Raymond Angry and turntablist DJ Stimulus, with Jones subbing for Chris Dave on drums.

The first concert of their flagship series bore witness. Large Pro proceeded to "duet" with Slum Village drummer Daru Jones and then an impressive array of jazz instrumentalists shared the stage with rap vet and amateur comic Jeru da Damaja, bringing life to his undiminished classic The Sun Rises in the East. But Jeru, a relative newbie to the scene, didn't allow for the jazz musicians--bassist Esperanza Spalding, pianist Ray Angry, saxophonists Jaleel Shaw and Marcus Strickland, trombonist Corey King, trumpeter Igmar Thomas and the aforementioned Jones--to get theirs until the end on the late J Dilla production De La Soul's "Stakes is High." It's a song heavily favored by the many jazz musicians reared when hip hop became pop, many of whom call Dilla a chief influence. Ray Angry, bobbed vehemently as he elaborated on the melody and the familiar loop, extended and improvised, similarly charged the soles of the healthy crowd that remained.

"Hip-hop legend Large Professor, who played a big part in helping forward the culture of hip-Hop in it's prime, kicked off the set with Daru Jones. Large Pro is an industry veteran and is mainly known for helping Nas rise to the forefront of the industry. Daru Jones, who has been doing a lot of work with Black Milk lately, collaborated with Large Pro in a truly sick set. Daru is a producer and artist on the rise that people should know about."

The other day my boy, Drummer/Producer Daru Jones hit me up about a show he was doing with Black Milk. He knew we were getting ready to put out our Basquiat tee and he wanted to rock it that night. He just hit me with the video from the show. Check it out below…

Hey, check out this clip from our show last week. It was off the chain! Before I moved to NY I ALWAYS played with a full band. Never over a track. Once I moved to NY I had to start all over and improvise, but damn, it feels good to be back in business. I had an amazing group of musicians and this performance, and it was such a blessing! Kiva on 88 keys, Rico on the guitar and Daru on the drums.. Like butta!

Bmilk

Equipped with a DJ, drummer, a keyboard player, and an MPC (which Milk frequents throughout his set to jam with his band), Black Milk has pulled off a well orchestrated live show to promote their already buzzing second album, Tronic (fatbeats). When watching and listening to him live, you get a great sense of growth and creativity from Milk. Lyrically he's proven himself amongst his Detroit peers like Slum Village and Royce Da' 5'9, and from a production standpoint he has shown that he can hold his own. With Tronic, Milk has managed to step out even more on the creative end to hand listener's a dose of more complex arrangements and classic, head nodding beats, as can be heard on Give the Drummer Sum and Hell Yeah. These Dilla inspired grooves translated really well on stage, and I would know, as I just saw him at The Knitting Factory. Another thing I noticed, Milk really trusts his band mates and this can be seen when Milk let's his band take over into a montage of instrumentals that leaves you wanting more.

::::::: New Interview ::::::

Our Fourth episode is now up and accessible online. This edition, we get to know the accomplished Detroit based Producer/MC "Black Milk". He speaks on a range of topics, which include the theme behind his new album TRONIC, as well as his influence and comparisons to the late and successful producer J Dilla. Black Milk has been pushing the bar musically for the past few years and he continues to excel further with the release of his new album. He has carved out a lane for himself and can stand among the best producers in hip hop today (easily Top 5). Feel free to check out his latest solo release entitled TRONIC on Fat Beats Records, also check for his previous solo and collabo releases that have impacted the success of his music career (ex, Popular Demand, Caltroit, Broken Wax etc.)
